Trip to the Outer Banks for Rachel’s birthday.

Really interesting to see this place in the winter. You couldn’t help but notice the liminal-esque nature of the empty beach town, Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina. A place that during the summer months would be bustling with sand covered people after long days of swimming, surfing, and sunbathing.

Not in February though. In February, the Outer Banks is filled with people who have permanently retreated to the coast in their later years, and although it may not be the warmest, the sun isn’t as shy as it is up north this time of the year. In February, the Outer Banks is also filled with people who have been born and raised there, where they have the winter months to catch their breath before caravans of people come to their hometown for an annual weeklong escape from the typical 9-5. This February, it was also filled with Rachel and I, who found a cheap Airbnb and were looking for a break from the seemingly never-ending layer of clouds that fills the sky, while also celebrating the most special person alive and her 23rd year of life.
