3/31/21—Fog in the Hills

A very rainy day led to some very crazy fog.

Took a trip out with only my 6D Mark II and a 50mm lens. I recently read something from one of my favorite photographers—and humans in general—Finn Beales, explaining how beneficial it can be to expand your skill solely with a 50mm lens. He refers to it as his “desert island lens”. It’s probably the most versatile prime lens that money can buy. You can shoot just about anything with it. It’s small, compact, and you can quite literally throw it in your pocket and take it anywhere. He also says that you should learn to love the constraints of shooting at a fixed focal length. As opposed to trying to decide what lens to use, turn your attention to what story you’re trying to tell. Actually move your feet and position yourself correctly. Less technical, more creative.

I recommend that everyone checks out his work, as he is one of the best storytellers in the world. But especially if you’re a photographer; I highly suggest doing a deep dive into this man’s portfolio, check out his workshop with Wildist, and read his book. The lessons I have learned from Finn are invaluable.
